History<\/mark><\/h2>\n

Until the end of the 1930s, the Cit\u00e9 de Pierres site was totally closed in with no access roads or tracks<\/strong> making it almost completely inaccessible<\/strong> except by a mule-track climbing up from the bottom of the Dourbie Gorge.<\/p>\n

It was difficult to move around the site because of its steep topography<\/strong> and dense vegetation.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Only a few privileged<\/strong> individuals had been able to discover the site with the help of guides<\/strong> at a time where tourism within France was only just beginning and much finance<\/strong> was required for both the tourists themselves and for the construction of the necessary infrastructure.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Having already opened the Aven Armand up to the public in 1927, the \u2018Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 de l\u2019Aven Armand\u2019<\/strong>, itself founded in 1925, therefore decided to invest in Montpellier-le-Vieux at the end of the 1930s.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The aim was to male this \u2018Cit\u00e9 des Pierres\u2019 accessible to the general public<\/strong>, just as the society has done for Aven Armand<\/a>, such that it could become a major contributor to developing tourism in the region.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The adventure began with the acquisition of the land<\/strong> and the first phase of works.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Now, more than 80 years later<\/strong>, more than a million visitors<\/strong> have been able to discover this marvellous site thanks to a series of works programs.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Whilst the site is truly exceptional for its giant rock formations and panoramic views<\/strong>, it is also home to a remarkable wealth of wildlife.<\/strong><\/p>\n

We have a responsibility and commitment<\/strong> to preserving<\/strong> and conserving<\/strong> the natural equilibrium whilst also allowing tens of thousands of visitors<\/strong> to discover the Cit\u00e9 de Pierres each year.<\/strong><\/p>\n

  • The Cit\u00e9 de Pierres is easy for everyone<\/strong> to access (families, children and seniors).<\/li>\n
  • Construction of a road access<\/strong> to provide vehicle access and development of a car-park and sanitary facilities the meet environmental standards as well as free drinking water fountains<\/strong> and a visitor reception and orientation office.<\/strong><\/li>\n
  • Creation, maintenance and clearance of sign-posted walking trails<\/strong> with explanatory signs at points of interest.<\/li>\n
  • Installation of relaxation and picnic areas.<\/strong><\/li>\n
  • Installation of a children\u2019s playground.<\/strong><\/li>\n
  • Creation of alternative ways<\/strong> to discover the Cit\u00e9 de Pierres to suit everyone\u2019s preferences: effortless, sporting or fun (miniature train, via ferrata & zip-lines or adventure games).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Security and information<\/span><\/h2>\n

    • In some areas the paths become too steep such that stairs and protective railings<\/strong> had to be installed. These need to be maintained, or even extended in the event of new rock falls, on an annual basis.<\/li>\n
    • There has to be emergency first aid<\/strong> and rescue available in the event of a visitor accident.<\/li>\n
    • Information, guidelines.<\/strong> All of our visitors love nature but sometimes it is difficult to do away with our daily habits, sometimes just because we are distracted.<\/li>\n
    • Informing visitors and reminding them that there are basic rules that must be followed in order to visit the Cit\u00e9 de Pierres under the best possible conditions.<\/li>\n
    • Fire risk awareness<\/strong>. Implementation of alert and evacuation procedures. Installation of shelters at specific points across the site.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Operation<\/span><\/h2>\n

      • As many as 15 people are required to run the site<\/strong> during the high season.<\/li>\n
      • The site is a private property, entrance<\/strong> and activity tickets are its only source of revenue.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        These revenues:<\/p>\n

        • finance the day-to-day operating and maintenance costs<\/strong> as a priority,<\/li>\n
        • what remains is used to finance essential investment<\/strong> projects to adapt the site to new visitor requirements where possible.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          Preserving and maintaining this listed natural site<\/span><\/h2>\n

          \"\"<\/p>\n

          The forest <\/strong><\/h3>\n

          For the most part the site is wooded<\/strong> with a number of rather invasive species.<\/p>\n

          In its natural state the site would be practically impossible to access and a number of trails have been made to allow access.<\/p>\n

          These trails need to be regularly cleared<\/strong> and fallen trees have to be evacuated.\u00a0 Without these maintenance works the vegetation would make the site impenetrable once more in but a few years.<\/p>\n

          This is essential work that has to be done every year over a period of weeks at the start of the tourist season.<\/p>\n

          At the same time, away from the trails, the population of trees grows constantly obstructing views of the giant rock formations.<\/p>\n

          This forest is mostly coniferous an therefore presents a major fire risk.<\/p>\n

          For these raisons a forest management<\/strong> plan is essential such that the \u2018resinous\u2019 conifer species can be gradually replaced with deciduous species whilst also trying to ensure maximum visibility of the rock formations.<\/strong> This management is especially difficult in the site\u2019s steeper zones.<\/p>\n

          \"\"<\/h3>\n

          Waste water<\/strong><\/h3>\n

          Waste water from the sanitary facilities could have a catastrophic impact on the site since there is no nearby sewage connection.<\/p>\n

          A simple sceptic tank would not be enough to cope with this to satisfaction.<\/p>\n

          Therefore, a water purification plant<\/strong> has been installed to cope with the high numbers of visitors. This is made up of 5 successive tanks near to the car-park which have been buried for discretion.\u00a0 They need to be annually maintained to keep them operative.<\/p>\n

          Dry toilets<\/strong> have also been installed at the site\u2019s centre and the \u2018Citerne\u2019 roundabout.<\/p>\n

          Waste:<\/strong><\/h3>\n

          Sorting bins<\/strong> are available on the car-park and picnic areas and are emptied daily.<\/p>\n

          In spite of the information signs<\/strong>, we regularly find rubbish on or near to the trails and our team has to pick up site rubbish on a daily basis.<\/p>\n
